A Super Blood Moon AND A Total Lunar Eclipse: 2019 Starts With A Rare Cosmic Event.

Image
A Super Blood Moon AND A Total Lunar Eclipse: 2019 Starts With A Rare Cosmic Event This is a rare and special event, as the next Super Blood Moon won’t be until Jan. 31, 2037, and this is the last total lunar eclipse to grace Earth’s sky until May 26, 2021. This upcoming January 21, things kick off with a bang. 2019 will have an incredible start, thanks to this rare celestial event. A Super Blood Moon is when a total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon, coincides with a Super Moon. A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Moon passes directly through the Earth’s umbra (full shadow). As the Moon has an irregular orbit, this does not happen often. It is known as a Blood Moon due to the eerie red hue which hits the Moon’s surface. The red colour comes from light being refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere and bending around to hit the Moon. How intense the red colour depends on the levels of dust in the atmosphere, and the atomospheric dust blocks other hues whilst allowing t...

Orionids Meteor Shower on Oct. 23, 2018

The mourning meteorological year due to Heli's slopes has been seen from midnight on Monday. As the sources of meteorological conditions appear to be in the Orion (Mirghshra) constellation, it is named Oriental Maitier Savor or Merthishra Meteorological Day. Meteorological time will be started on October 21, 2011 at local time, starting from 05:00 AM on October 05 at 5:45 pm. Suresh Bhattarai, president of Nepal Astronomalic Society (Nasso), will be the best after 3:45 to see the meteorological year. https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/meteor-shower/orionid.html According to him, during the meteorological period, the meteorological observation is estimated to be 20 per hour. According to Bhattarai, the view of the meteorological temperature will be up to 67 kilometers per second, creating friction at about 70 km above the atmosphere. What is Meteor Rain? When the comet is revolving around the sun, when the sun comes near the sun, it leaves th...

Nepal goes green with a genial grin. A typical day for 29-year-old Sukhai Mala begins with a visit to the local government office, where large posters promoting solar panels, organic farming and proper sanitation adorn the walls. From the office, Sukhai sets out on his bicycle, pedaling across road and field from house to house. With his youthful charm and friendly smile, he’s a persuasive spokesperson. And before the sun has set, he has spread his message to as many residents as he has been able to pedal to. His message is environmental. Along with hundreds of other social mobilizers employed by the Government of Nepal, Mala explains the government’s new environmental incentives and schemes, and encourages citizens to adopt environmentally friendly behaviours. This cadre of well-trained youth are familiar faces within their communities, well known for their accessible demeanor, their resourceful knowledge and their ability to advocate for the needs of the villagers w...

What existed before Big Bang?

Image
What came the beginning? It is difficult enough to imagine a time, roughly 13.7 billion years ago, when the entire universe existed as a  singularity . According to the  big bang theory , one of the main contenders vying to explain how the universe came to be, all the matter in the cosmos -- all of space itself -- existed in a form smaller than a subatomic particle. Once you think about that, an even more difficult question arises: What existed just before the big bang occurred? The question itself predates modern cosmology by at least 1,600 years. Fourth-century theologian St. Augustine wrestled with the nature of God before the creation of the universe. His answer?  Time  was part of God's creation, and there simply was no "before" that a deity could call home. Armed with the best physics of the 20th century, Albert Einstein came to very similar conclusions with his theory of relativity. Just consider the effect of mass on time. A planet's he...

Did Time Exist Before the Big Bang?

Image
(Image via Lacza) Before we can answer the part about the big bang, we must first delve into the potentially speculative nature of time. Time, in essence, is a non-spatial dimension dealing with the concept of duration. From our perspective, time is a linear motion from cause to effect. But contrary to the Newtonian idea of time — where it is perfectly regulated and completely uniform — time is currently thought to be completely relative. On top of this, there is actually quite a lot of debate over what exactly time is  (and even  if it even exists   at all).  We do know that time and space are the principle concepts in our dimension  (with three spatial coordinates and one temporal coordinate) , so to ask, “what is time” without also asking, “what is space” is only asking half of the question. As per Hermann Minkowski  (and later, Einstein) , there isn’t time AND space, as if they are two separate quantities, instead there is ...

Book review: The Theory of Everything

Image
The Theory of Everything - Stephen Hawking   The theory of everything is an interesting concept in itself. I always was intrigued by the idea of origin of universe and its growth. Apparently a lot of people have been interested in it other than me. And their interest has been a lot more active than mine. As it turns out everything that happens can be expressed as mathematical equations. Or at least people have been trying to. I knew “A brief history of time by Stephen Hawking” dwells on the subject too. I just chose to read this book because it had lesser number of pages. And I wanted a summary of the history of time and could do without the technicalities. But then, even this smaller book is quite dense. You need to have a healthy amount of curiosity to be able to get through this book. In the end, it doesn’t answer any specific question you might have on the universe. In fact, Stephen Hawking is blissfully diplomatic about most things. And the...

Longest total lunar eclipse of the century to turn the moon red this month

Image
Prepare for this century's longest total lunar  eclipse. Get ready to see something pretty cool later this month. On the 27 July we'll be able to see what's expected to be the longest total lunar eclipse of this century! A lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned. That means the Earth is directly between the Sun and Moon, blocking the sunlight. The eclipse then happens when the Moon enters the shadow created by Earth. When it's a total eclipse the Moon can look a bright reddish orange colour. That's why some people call it a 'Blood Moon'. It usually turns a deep, dark red because it's being lit up by light which has passed through the Earth's atmosphere and then bent back towards the moon by something called refraction. The lunar eclipse will last for around one hour and fourty minutes and if the sky is clear it should be visible after sunset. You don't need a telescope but a good pair of binoculars might help. Here in the ...
